Guwahati, Jan. 12: Assam tea has broken a record, yet again!

A line of Mahaluxmi CTC tea today sold for Rs 302 a kg, bettering its previous record by Rs 1 per kg within 15 days. The earlier best price was fetched on December 28.

The tea was sold under sale number 2 at 10.30am today at theGuwahati Tea Auction Centre for a Delhi-based buyer. The grade was BP (Broken Pekoe).

"We have consistently been making good tea throughout the year and today's prices are a reflection of that," A. Rahman, director ofMohijuli Tea Company, told The Telegraph.

He said Assam tea was known for its quality; if paid a little attention, it would fetch very good prices. "We pay attention right from the time of plucking so that the quality is the best," he said.

Mahaluxmi garden and another garden at Tezalpatty, both owned by Mohijuli, together produce about 10 lakh kg of black tea annually on a 500-hectare area. Both the gardens are located at Biswanath Chariali in Sonitpur district of Assam.

While some might say this is just for one line of tea, sources say this is an encouraging trend for Assam tea as good prices continuously push up the value of the brand.

With record prices being fetched at the auction centre, buyers might purchase more from here. The Guwahati Auction Centre is the third largest CTC auction centre in the world. Characteristics like rich malty flavour, fuller body, bright colour, briskness and sweet aroma has made Assam tea a hot favourite among tea enthusiasts all over the world. "When the time for second flush (June-July) comes, we might get better prices," an official of the company said.

A source said the Rs 302 per kg-tea will be sold at around Rs 400 at the retail level.

Manoj Sethia of Maruti Enterprises, who bought the tea for a Delhi-based buyer, said the tea manufacturing process of the garden was very good which ensured good price.

Kamal Chandra Das, vice-president of Paramount Tea Marketing (P) Limited, said although the season for tea had ended, the trend for better tea was continuing. "Good tea will always fetch good prices in whichever season," he said.

Paramount was the broker for Mahaluxmi tea. Das said this also boded well for electronic auctions as it was fetching good prices and the process was transparent. "There was a lot of opposition earlier to e-auction but with good results, the trend has now found favour," he said.

Assam has been at the forefront in demanding and ensuring major value-added features in the e-auction programme.

"This is a good trend and more people will buy tea from GTAC now," Lalit Jalan of Assam Tea Traders, a tea buyer, said.

"The emphasis should be on producing good tea and people will pay for quality tea," he said.

The comic depicts the life of Jobs from his adoption as a baby to his unveiling of products such as the iPhone and iPad, Sky Newsreported.

Jobs died in October, aged 56, following a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

"The Steve Jobs comic is basically an overview of his whole life, kind of a short biography for someone that knows of him but doesn't know all the details. It really briefly hits on all the bigger points in his life," said Thor Parker of Midtown Comics in New York.

"The artwork is pretty basic for a comic. You see a lot of iconic images that are related to Steve Jobs. You see comic renditions of his Forbes magazine cover, a lot of his keynote addresses," he said.

Jobs founded Apple in 1976 with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne.

London, Jan 12 (ANI): The Indian High Commission in London has formally complained to the BBC, accusing Top Gear presenterJeremy Clarkson of offensive behaviour for making jokes about Indian people and culture.

Many viewers complained that in a Top Gear "India Special", which was broadcast twice during Christmas, Clarkson made a series of controversial remarks about India's clothing, trains, food and history.

In one programme Clarkson appeared to make light of the lack of sanitation in India for poor residents by driving around slums in a Jaguar fitted with a toilet.

In one scene, he is seen taking off his trousers in front of two Indian dignitaries to show them how to use a trouser press.

In another, the Top Gear team place banners promoting British industry on trains.

One read, 'British IT is good for your company', and another, 'Eat English muffins'. The message, however, became intentionally obscene when the carriages of the trains separate and the banner splits.

Now, in a letter sent to the programme's producer, officials at the High Commission condemned the programme as "tasteless", and accused the BBC of breaching undertakings about the filming, The Telegraph reports.

"The programme was replete with cheap jibes, tasteless humour and lacked cultural sensitivity that we expect from the BBC," the letter said.

"This to convey our deep disappointment over the documentary for its content and the tone of the presentation. You are clearly in breach of the agreement that you had entered into, completely negating our constructive and proactive facilitation," it added.

This is not the first time that Top Gear has become embroiled in a row over the behaviour and comments of its presenters.

Earlier this year co-presenter Richard Hammond made an insulting parody of Mexicans. He suggested that a "lazy" and "feckless" vehicle reflected the national characteristics of its country of origin.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Marine Corps said on Wednesday it would investigate a video showing what appear to be American forces in Afghanistan urinating on the bodies of dead Taliban fighters.

The video, which was posted on YouTube and other websites, shows four men in camouflage Marine combat uniforms urinating on the bodies of three dead Taliban.

One of them jokes: "Have a nice day, buddy." Another makes a lewd joke about a shower.

A Muslim civil rights group in the United States condemned the alleged desecration of corpses in a letter to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

"Any guilty parties must be punished to the full extent allowed by the Uniform Code of Military Justice and by relevant American laws," the Council on American-Islamic Relations said in the letter, a copy of which was sent to media organizations including Reuters.

The video could aggravate anti-American sentiment in Afghanistan after a decade of a war that seen other cases of abuse. The U.S. military has been prosecuting soldiers from the Army's 5th Stryker Brigade on charges of murdering unarmed Afghan civilians while deployed in 2010 in Kandahar province.

Greene, 56, will also serve on Google board's audit committee, the company said.

Greene will become the 10th member of Google's board, filling a spot left vacant when former Genentech CEO Arthur Levinson resigned in 2009. Levinson, who is also a director at Apple Inc, resigned after federal regulators began looking into the "interlocking directorates" between the two companies.

Greene, who co-founded VMware in 1998, served as the company's CEO from 1998 to 2008. She also is a member of Intuit's board of directors.

San Francisco, Jan 13 (IANS) Microsoft Thursday announced a patent licensing agreement with LG Electronics covering tablets, smartphones and other consumer devices running Google's Androidor Chrome operating system.

Microsoft said it marks the 11th deal with a device manufacturer leveraging Google's operating system platform.

"More than 70 percent of all Android smartphones in the US are now receiving coverage under Microsoft's patent portfolio," Xinhua quoted a press release from the Microsoft as saying.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. So far, Microsoft has struck major cross-licensing patent agreements with HTC, Samsung and Acer, among others.

Last September, Microsoft announced a broad patent deal with Samsung. US media reports cited South Korean media as saying that Microsoft had wanted Samsung to pay $10-15 for each Android device.

The booming mobile market has been harassed by acrimonious legal battles over patent infringement. Being an open source operating system, Google's Android has become a major target of patent suits.

Microsoft has been going after companies that make phones and tablets running Android, rather than directly against Google.

But the two tech giants are still engaged in public spats over the issue after Google's top legal officer posted a scathing blog last August accusing Microsoft and other companies of waging "a hostile, organized campaign against Android".

Motorola Mobility, which Google announced to acquire in a $12.5 billion deal last August, currently is the last major Android device vendor that refuses to take a license from Microsoft.

Frank Shaw, Microsoft's head of communications, used Twitter to taunt Google Thursday, twitting "Hey Google -- we are the 70 percent" with a link to their press release.

Ciudad Juarez (Mexico), Jan 13 (IANS/EFE) Traffic police personnel in the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez gave a six-year-old boy a citation after he crashed his toy motorcycle into an SUV, a police spokesperson said.

The incident occurred Dec 27, when the boy, identified only as Gael, was riding his toy motorcycle in the gated subdivision where his family lives and collided with an SUV that had blown a stop sign, said police spokesperson Mayra Maldonado.

Officers gave the boy a citation for driving without a license and colliding with another vehicle, and charged him for the cost of transporting his toy motorbike to the municipal dump, Maldonado said.

Municipal officials returned the toy motorcycle to the boy the same afternoon and voided the citation after police investigators concluded that the woman driving the SUV was at fault for failing to stop.

The officers who cited the child will be punished for "having acted outside the law", Ciudad Juarez municipal secretary Hector Arcelus said.

Charging a six-year-old child with traffic violations was "ridiculous", the boy's mother, Karla Noriega, said.

"All I wanted was for them to give my son back his motorcycle and for the fine to be voided. It shows lack of judgment and is ridiculous that they cited Gael since he cannot have a license because he's only six," Noriega told EFE.

The North fired the KN-02 missiles, which are usually deployed against ground targets and have a range of about 75 miles (120 kilometers), into its eastern waters on Wednesday, a Defense Ministry official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because of ministry policy.

Japan's Sankei Shimbun newspaper first reported the tests.

North Korea regularly conducts short-range missile tests, but the latest came as it tries to consolidate new leader Kim Jong Un's grip on power after his father Kim Jong Il's death on Dec. 17.

North Korea has made it clear that it will continue Kim Jong Il's "songun," or military-first, policy under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, and a steady stream of propaganda has sought to portray the young leader as a confident military commander. There has been uneasiness about his rise among the North's neighbors and in Washington.

North Korea conducted a short-range missile test hours after it announced Kim's death on Dec. 19.

Wednesday's tests were seen as part of the North's attempts in recent years to improve the range and accuracy of its short-range missiles.

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — Myanmar freed many of its most prominent political prisoners Friday in a long-awaited step toward national reconciliation that also has been a key condition set byWestern nations for easing sanctions against the country.

The releases of several political activists and ethnic minority leaders, confirmed by their relatives, were part of a presidential pardon for 651 detainees who Myanmar state radio and television said would take part in "nation-building."

It was the latest in a flurry of reforms by the new, nominally civilian government as it seeks international legitimacy after years of military repression. The government also has launched a dialogue with pro-democracy leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, and on Thursday signed a cease-fire in a decades-long insurgency by ethnic Karen rebels — both key conditions for better ties with the West.

The prisoner releases appeared to have gone most, if not all, of the way toward meeting demands by Western nations such as the United States and Britain for a broad political amnesty, and will put strong pressure on the West to lift sanctions soon.

However, the number of political prisoners who may still remain behind bars will likely take several days to account for, especially since different groups maintain different lists of such detainees.

Those freed Friday included Min Ko Naing, a nearly legendary student leader from Myanmar's failed 1988 pro-democracy uprising.

Witnesses said the charismatic activist was greeted by a huge crowd as he came out of the jail in Thayet, 545 kilometers (345 miles) north of Yangon. Min Ko Naing, who has now served two long prison terms, was wearing the traditional garb he favored as an activist: a short peach-colored jacket over a black-checked sarong.

Also freed was ethnic leader Khun Tun Oo, the chairman of the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy, who was serving a 93-year sentence. He was arrested along with several other Shan leaders in February 2005, and charged with high treason and other offenses after governmentaccused him of launching movements to disintegrate national unity.

The new government that took office after November 2010 elections replaced a military junta with a government that remains strongly linked to the military.

However, the new government has embarked on reforms to try to end Myanmar's international isolation and win a lifting of political and economic sanctions imposed on the previous junta because of its repressive policies.

Recent reforms also include the legalization of labor unions, and increases in press freedom. Several previous mass amnesties for convicts had resulted in the release of more than 200 political detainees, but had met with disappointment because many high-profile prisoners were still kept behind bars.

Infosys Q3 profit rises 33 pct, beats forecast

BANGALORE (Reuters) - Infosys Ltd, India's second-largest software services exporter, reported a 33.3 percent rise in quarterly profit, beating market forecasts, as a weaker rupee helped boost margins.

Bangalore-based Infosys said on Thursday consolidated net profit for the third quarter ended December 31 rose to 23.72 billion rupeesfrom 17.8 billion rupees a year earlier.

Revenue rose 30.8 percent to 92.98 billion rupees.

A Reuters poll of 10 brokerages had forecast a profit of 23.1 billion rupees on revenue of 92.2 billion rupees for the company, whose customers include Procter & Gamble Co and Volkswagen .

India's $76 billion IT services industry is driven by global demand for outsourcing and competes with Accenture Plc and IBM for contracts to maintain computer systems and write software applications.

Shares in Infosys, which has a market value of about $31 billion, have fallen nearly a fifth in 2011, compared with a nearly 16 percent drop in the sector index and nearly 25 percent loss in the main 30-share BSE index .

LG's Q4 handset results improved, in talks on deals

LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - LG Electronics Inc <066570.KS> is engaged in talks with various parties on possible deals, the head of LG's mobile business said on Wednesday, as the world's No.3 handset maker seeks to turn around its struggling handset operation.

The South Korean firm, however, remains committed to its mobile business and does not have any plan to ditch the loss-making operation, Park Jong-seok, chief executive of LG's mobile communications business, told Reuters.

"We are always talking to other businesses and companies (on alliances and deals). We're looking into almost every alliance that the mobile industry can think of," Park said in an interview.

"Some of the talks are quite active...but one thing that does not change is that LG is very committed to the mobile business and it will not be up for sale. Our recent rights offering was mainly aimed at investing in handsets, and that proves it."

LG recently made a near $1 billion cash call mainly to prop up its floundering handset business after the operation reported a loss of nearly the same amount over the last six consecutive quarters.

Its slow pace of recovery prompted talk that LG may have to restructure the business amid a series of alliances in the sector. Google agreed last year to buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion and Nokiaalso dropped its software to make phones using Microsoft's platform.

EARNINGS RECOVERY

Park said the loss-making handset maker saw results improving "a lot" in the fourth quarter thanks to solid sales of its Optimus LTE model, which went on sale in early October.

"Earnings will get better this year, as we plan to raise premium phones, mainly LTE models, to more than half of our smartphone lineup."

LG, which has failed to introduce compelling models to challenge the likes of Apple and Samsung Electronics <005930.KS>, has sold more than 500,000 Optimus LTE phones so far and sales are likely to top 1 million by the end of January, Park said.

The model with a 4.5-inch display runs on Google's Android platform and is LG's most popular smartphone. LG is seeking to revive its fortunes by mustering strength in 4th-generation Long Term Evolution mobile technology as mobile operators upgrade their networks to increase 4G services.

LTE is the fastest-growing segment of the wireless business in terms of global subscriber growth, with worldwide subscribers jumping to 11.6 million last year from just 300,000 a year ago and set to grow more than five-fold this year, according to research firm IHS iSuppli.

LG has said it has some 23 percent of key LTE patents, worth nearly $8 billion.

Park said it had long been working on a new LTE smartphone with a large 5-inch screen that could also work as a tablet, which will be launched soon.

Samsung, the world's biggest smartphone maker, unveiled a similar-sized phone late last year that has received good reviews.

Washington, Jan 12 (ANI): NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has uncovered a large, rare population of hot, bright stars inside the hub of the neighbouring Andromeda galaxy.

Astronomers were surprised when they spotted these stars because physical models show that only an unusual type of old star can be as hot and as bright in ultraviolet light.

While Hubble has spied these ultra-blue stars before in Andromeda, the new observation covers a much broader area, revealing that these stellar misfits are scattered throughout the galaxy's bustling centre.

Astronomers used Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3 to find roughly 8,000 of the ultra-blue stars in a stellar census made in ultraviolet light, which traces the glow of the hottest stars.

"We were not looking for these stars. They stood out because they were bright in ultraviolet light and very different from the stars we expected to see," said Julianne Dalcanton of the University of Washington in Seattle, leader of the Hubble survey.

The telescope spied the stars within 2,600 light-years of the core. After analysing the stars for nearly a year, Dalcanton's team determined that they were well past their prime.

"The stars are dimmer and have a range of surface temperatures different from the extremely bright stars we see in the star-forming regions of Andromeda," said Phil Rosenfield of the University of Washington, the paper's lead author.

As these stars evolved, puffing up to become red giants, they ejected most of their outer layers to expose their blue-hot cores. When normal sun-like stars swell up to become red giants, they lose much less material and therefore never look as bright in the ultraviolet.

"We caught these stars when they're the brightest, just before they become white dwarfs," said team member Leo Girardi of the National Institute for Astrophysics's Astronomical Observatory of Padua.

"It is likely that there are many other similarly hot stars in this central part of Andromeda at earlier stages of their lives. But such stars are too dim for Hubble to see because they're mixed in with a crowd of normal stars," he added.

The team's results were presented at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Austin, Texas and will be published in The Astrophysical Journal

New Delhi, Jan 11 (ANI): Karnataka Chief Minister Sadananda Gowda will inaugurate the seventeenth national youth festival in Mangalore tomorrow.

Corporate Affairs Minister Veerappa Moily and Sports Minister Ajay Maken will be the Chief Guest at the event.

Maken will give away the National Youth Awards to 28 individuals and two organisations at the inaugural function. This is the first time that the festival is being organised in Karnataka.

The theme of this year's event will be "Celebrating Diversity in Unity". As many as 5000 young persons from all States and UTs are expected to participate in the youth festival. Apart from that, young delegates from SAARC countries will also participate in the festival thereby giving it truly "diversified" character.

REUTERS - An Iranian nuclear scientist was killed on Wednesday in the latest in a series of mysterious attacks on scientists in the country since 2009.

Iran says its nuclear programme is purely for civilian use but Western powers believe it has military goals.

Here are some details on scientists in Iran and events linked to them over the last three years:

June 2009:

- Shahram Amiri said he was kidnapped in June 2009 when on a pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia and transferred to the United States. He said he was offered $50 million to remain in America and "to spread lies" about Iran's nuclear work.

- Before his disappearance, Amiri worked at Iran's Malek Ashtar University, an institution closely connected to the country's Revolutionary Guards. Tehran initially refused to acknowledge Amiri's involvement in Iran's nuclear programme.

- Amiri returned to Tehran in July 2010. Washington denied kidnapping him and insisted he had lived freely in the United States.

January 2010:

- Nuclear scientist Massoud Ali-Mohammadi was killed by a remote-controlled bomb in Tehran on January 12. Some opposition websites said he had backed moderate candidate Mirhossein Mousavi in the disputed 2009 election that secured President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's return to power.

- Iranian officials described the physics professor as a nuclear scientist but a spokesman said he did not work for the Atomic Energy Organisation. He lectured at Tehran University.

- Western sources said the professor worked closely with Mohsen Fakhrizadeh-Mahabadi and Fereydoun Abbassi-Davani, both subject to U.N. sanctions because of their work on suspected nuclear weapons development.

- A list of Ali-Mohammadi's publications on Tehran University's website suggested his specialism was theoretical particle physics, not nuclear energy, a Western physics professor said.

November 2010:

* Two car bomb blasts killed an Iranian nuclear scientist and wounded another in Tehran on November 29 in what Iranian officials called an Israeli or U.S.-sponsored attack on its atomic programme.

- Majid Shahriyari was killed and his wife was injured. Iran's atomic energy agency chief Ali Akbar Salehi said Shahriyari had a role in one of its biggest nuclear projects, but did not elaborate, the official news agency IRNA reported. He was a lecturer at Shahid Beheshti University.

- In the other blast Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani and his wife were both wounded. Abbasi-Davani, head of physics at Imam Hossein University, has been personally subject to U.N. sanctions because of what Western officials said was his involvement in suspected nuclear weapons research.

- Intelligence Minister Heydar Moslehi later said: "This terrorist act was carried out by intelligence services such as the CIA, Mossad and the MI6. A group that wanted to carry out a terrorist act but did not succeed, was also arrested. They confessed that they were trained by these intelligence services."

- In February 2011 President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appointed Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani as vice-president and head of the Atomic Energy Organisation, Fars news agency reported.

July 2011:

* Physicist Darioush Rezai, 35, was shot dead by gunmen in eastern Tehran on July 23. The university lecturer had a PhD in physics. Deputy Interior Minister Safarali Baratlou said he was not linked to Iran's nuclear programme after early reports in some media said he was.

January 2012:

* Mostafa Ahmadi-Roshan, a 32-year-old graduate of chemical engineering was killed by a bomb placed on his car by a motorcyclist in Tehran. Another passenger died in hospital and a pedestrian was also injured. The attack was similar to that in November 2010.

ERLIN (Reuters) - Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich landed back in Germany on Wednesday after a nine-day training camp in Qatar and trip to India with coach Jupp Heynckes brimming with confidence ahead of the league restart next week.

"I am extremely satisfied because we worked very well overall," Heynckes told reporters after his team returned from their final friendly in New Delhi, a 4-0 win against India.

"It was an outstanding training camp and we have worked intensively," he said after Bayern's dominant victories in all four of their friendlies.

The Bavarians, who are not planning to add any players during the winter transfer window, faceBorussia Moenchengladbach when the league resumes on January 20.

With only three points separating them from champions Borussia Dortmund and a busy programme ahead that also includes German Cup and Champions League matches, Heynckes was happy to have all his players fit for the Bundesliga restart, including midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.

"Everyone is healthy and everyone is fit. So we have laid a super foundation and could not be better prepared," said sports director Christian Nerlinger.

Germany international Schweinsteiger looked to have fully recovered from shoulder surgery in early November and was also on target in Tuesday's win with a fine 20-metre strike.
